Rosie Morning – Health Transformation Ep.8

Managing Self-Judgement – Don’t “should” on yourself

July 21, 2016

Like any journey, Roger’s health transformation is not without its ups and downs. This episode he shares some of his setbacks. But as we tell Roger, “Even if you fall flat on your face, you’re still moving forward.”

We can learn a lot from following Roger’s experience because he has a wonderful ability to observe both his surroundings and himself. As Roger observed, society (at least in NB) is not geared for those who eat a whole-food plant-based diet. These external pressures can make this transition challenging initially. There will be times when we make choices that may not be the healthiest but it’s best to just learn from them and move on. We discuss the importance of being mindful of our thoughts especially those of self-judgement (which is most often negative). There is no need to “should” on yourself. Remember, adopting a WFPB diet does not have to be all-or-nothing, and the heathy behaviour you add is just as important as the unhealthy behaviour you take away. So, if you are tempted by Pepsi, don’t tell yourself you “shouldn’t” have some, but first have an apple (a healthy source of sugar, which is what you’re actually craving), and if you still want some Pepsi after, you’ll likely want less.

Social pressure is a powerful factor in behaviour change. We all have a need to belong. That’s why SLS Health Coaching is promoting a community of like-minded people who enjoy the benefits of living a healthy life-style. One of the ways we do this is through our bi-monthly “Plant-Powered Potlucks”. Check out our SLS website’s Events page for the next date. We hope to see you there!
